Beautiful forms and Gorgeous glazes

Unsame

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to visit the Pierre Reboul's Michelin restaurant in Aix en Provence, France.

The décor and furnishings were just beautifully put together. The tables and chairs were all different but all blended well together. The eight courses all came on different tableware, not only different in size and colour but also material. The cutlery, likewise was different for each course. Different material, different shape, and so different as it didn’t match. The food was exquisite. It was a fabulous evening of entertainment. I was in heaven.

It takes far more thinking about to choose tableware that is not all the same. It makes for a far more interesting meal, in my opinion.

I might be wrong but I assume that being able to have everything matching, came into fashion with industrialisation. Up till then, only the wealthy could afford matching hand made items and so when it was possible for everyone to have matching items, they did. Department stores were full of sets of things. Growing up, my family had matching everything, which I detested.

I couldn't understand why it was deemed better to have all this matching. I thought it much more interesting to have individual items which were simple, functional and connected to the natural world. I preferred utility over decoration. Less is more in my mind. I love neutral colours to make calm and brightness with accents of bold colours. In this way, rooms, tableware etc. become individual and reflect ones personality. Having a matching 3 piece suite was standard practice as was/is a canteen of matching cutlery and a dining set of 6 of each. It's gone full circle now in that it's fashionable with interior designers to have a large sofa in one colour and additional seating in contrasting tones.

So why not do the same with tableware? How more interesting would it become to dine on 'unsame' tableware. Offer your guests a blend of textures, contrasts and soft hues to create an interesting sleek, modern feel to their eating experience.

Lets be rebels. Let's enjoy the raw, real, maybe messy but beautiful unique items made with passion and love.
